To continue to improve timely access to intravenous (IV) recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rtPA) for more patients with acute ischaemic stroke (AIS), barriers to treatment are being addressed and new processes are being introduced. Two recent articles have highlighted how implementing new processes to improve access to, and timeliness of, thrombolysis can lead to economic as well as societal benefits; with the costs of implementation being offset by savings from reduced dependency of patients.1,2 This issue of the Actilyse® Publication Alert Newsletter highlights studies that have successfully challenged known economic, organizational and educational barriers to thrombolytic therapy, together with publications that describe behavioural and other treatment barriers yet to be overcome.
